Program Title: The J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program in Columbus, Indiana. A newly founded program of the School of Art, Architecture + Design of Indiana University.
Brittain Brewer studied architecture, interior design, and city and regional planning at Auburn University. He has worked for various architectural firms in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in Portland, Oregon. Most notably, in Pennsylvania, Mr. Brewer worked for the firm of Venturi Rauch and Scott Brown on two landmark projects, the Seattle Art Museum and the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery in London. In Portland, Oregon Mr. Brewer has served as a Senior Designer for Nike, Inc. as an early and key contributor to the success of the NIKETOWN program, as the owner of his own design firm for nearly twenty years, in association with D. Dustin Posner, Architect; as a Senior Associate for the SRG Partnership; and as the Director of Interiors for LRS Architects.
Learning Objectives:
- What are the identifiable skills and performance required of a recent graduate of an accredited architectural program when being considered for employment?
- What is promised by NAAB Accreditation?
- How do those qualities compare and contrast to the traditional expectations of practice and architecture school graduates?
- How might continuing education be enhanced, improved, and enriched in practice?
West Baden Springs Hotel Renovation
Saturday, June 1, 2019
11:00 – 12:00 PM, EDT
1 LU/HSW
Program Description:
When the West Baden Springs Hotel opened in 1902, industry journals immediately recognized it as an architectural and engineering marvel, naming the hotel the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. In 1974, the hotel was listed as a National Historic Landmark. By the 1990’s, the hotel was in a state of deterioration that landed it on the “10 Most Endangered List” compiled by the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. Restoration began in the summer of 1996 and the original scope of work was completed in the fall of 1998. The work completed at that point resulted in the restoration of about 25% of the property and stabilization of the hotel. The decision was then made to completely restore the hotel and grounds with the goal of making The West Baden Springs Hotel a world-class destination once again.
The hotel is a six-story, circular building with over 500 original rooms. Its most distinguishing architectural feature is a magnificent six-story clear-span glass and steel-domed atrium. The hotel is situated on 255 acres with eight outbuildings, which include a bathhouse, an observatory, a gazebo, and a billiard and bowling pavilion.
The long-awaited and publicly acclaimed reopening of the West Baden Springs Hotel took place in the spring of 2007, a fitting time for new beginnings from long-established roots.
The presentation will be led by Jason Williams from Silver Creek Engineering. Silver Creek Engineering, Inc. has been involved in the restoration project since it began, and Mr. Williams has been a leading part of that since he began at the firm in 1998. He will be talking about the many structural engineering challenges of the restoration. This includes structural repairs to failed areas of the building that addressed not only stabilization and repair, but also the preservation of historic craftsmanship. It also includes new structures on the grounds that were built to match original building footprints and architecture.
Learning Objectives:
· Structural repairs and stabilization of an Historic Landmark
· Analysis of existing structures for current code required loads
· Design and analysis of repairs and additions to an original structure with unknown building materials
· Understanding the design of repairs and stabilization and incorporating historical aspects of the original building
