Mahoney Residence Architect: Jeff Rawlins 1942 Payne Street Louisville, KY 40206 Size: 871 square feet 1 bedrooms | 1 bathrooms
This building was originally a commercial building the owner converted to a residence in 2017. Ms. Mahoney wanted an additional bedroom and bath that either she or guests could use independently. In addition to living quarters, she is an artist requiring studio space, and also builds limousines for 21C that requires car access to the studio. With this broad program in mind, the homeowner brought in the architect to make it all work.
The project had a number of other challenges: The property is bordered by Payne Street and by a side street. The goal was to make the house feel open and light-filled yet private, landmarks approval was required and received, and a tree needed to be saved and was.
The design solution brought continuity to the exterior of the structures by using the same metal throughout. The architect then ‘edited’ the envelope where windows were needed to fill the space with light.
3D modeling was used to visualize the design as well as to explain the project to neighbors.
