The homeowners approached architect Mary Herd Jackson to help them turn a cut-up 1950’s floorplan into a home with a layout more suitable for the young couple’s lifestyle including entertaining and cooking.
The Wells were open to suggestions about optimal solutions. Fortunately, the neighborhood home values would support a substantial investment.
To open-up the first floor while not giving up bedrooms required enlarging into the basement or the attic. The attic was the more desirable option. To make it work, the stairs were added, the floor joists strengthened, and the roof raised.
Lots of conversations between the homeowners and architect, considering many options, and detailed construction documents were key to the success of the project.
